How to get the best result
Record one instrument or voice at a time, close to the microphone, in a quiet room. Play the melody at a steady tempo. The transcriber finds the notes, works out Sa and the tempo, and writes everything out in sargam (with komal and tivra swaras and octave dots) and in staff notation with the right key signature.
If the tempo or Sa is not what you intended, change it and the notation updates instantly. Then play the notes back on a real piano to check them by ear, and download MIDI or MusicXML.
Frequently asked questions
What can it transcribe?
A melody played or sung by one instrument or voice works best: flute, saxophone, violin, harmonium, voice, or a single line on the piano. Piano with chords can be transcribed too; the melody line is written out and every note goes into the MIDI file.
How accurate is it?
On clean solo recordings of flute, saxophone, violin, harmonium, piano and voice, almost every note comes out right in our tests. Ornaments such as meend and fast taans are simplified to the main notes, so it is worth a quick check against your ear.
How does it find Sa?
It looks at which note the melody rests on, returns to and ends on, together with its Pa. If it picks a different Sa from the one you intend, choose Sa yourself and the notation updates instantly.
Can I open the result in MuseScore, Sibelius or Logic?
Yes. Download MusicXML for notation software such as MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale and Dorico, or MIDI for any DAW such as Logic, Ableton or FL Studio.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers.
Can I transcribe film songs?
You can transcribe your own playing or singing of any song for practice. Please respect copyright: do not publish or sell transcriptions of copyrighted songs without permission.
