Small groups, real attention
At Origin Story, guitar classes run in small groups of up to four students, one class a week, with the same teacher each week. A small group keeps lessons lively and sociable, while your teacher still hears, guides and corrects every student in every class.
Private lessons are rare and depend on teacher availability. If you have a specific goal, tell us at your free demo and we will suggest the best way to reach it.

What a typical guitar class looks like
- A quick tune-up and warm-up for the fingers
- A new chord, strum or riff, shown by your teacher and tried by everyone

The course
What you will learn
- Holding the guitar, tuning and a relaxed technique
- Your first open chords: G, C, D, E minor and A minor
- Strumming patterns and changing chords in time
- Your first complete songs
- Barre chords and moving shapes up the neck
- Fingerpicking and arpeggios
- The pentatonic scale and your first solos
- Reading chord charts and tab
- Lead technique: bends, slides and vibrato
- Improvising over chord progressions
- Arranging and writing your own songs
- Graded exam pieces, if you choose exams
Exams and performing
Grades if you want them, stages when you are ready
Graded exams with RSL (Rockschool) or Trinity Rock & Pop are optional. Many students simply play for the joy of it. Origin Story is part of Prism School of Music, with ISoM, RSL and Trinity-affiliated classes, and students can perform at our live shows, five or more a year.

Everything you might ask
Acoustic or electric: which should I start with?
Either works. Most beginners start on acoustic because it is simple to play at home; if the music you love is rock or blues, electric is a great first choice too. We will help you decide at your free demo.
Do I need my own guitar?
You will need a guitar to practise at home between classes. If you have not bought one yet, come to the demo first and we will suggest the right size and type for you.
How big are the group classes?
Groups have up to four students, so your teacher can listen to and correct each person in every class.
How often are classes?
One class a week, at the same time each week.
Do you offer private lessons?
Most of our students learn in small groups, which we find keeps them motivated. Private lessons are rare and depend on teacher availability: ask us at your free demo.
