How Long Does It Take to Learn Guitar? A Realistic Timeline

By Pramit Sarkar, Founder · Oct 23, 2026 · 6 min read

A guitar lesson at Prism School of Music

Quick answer: With weekly lessons and short daily practice, most beginners play simple songs within their first two months and are ready for a first graded exam in 6 to 12 months. An average student takes about 6 to 9 months per grade, so reaching Grade 8 usually takes five to six years.

The first two months: chords and your first songs

In the first weeks you learn to hold the guitar and pick comfortably, tune it, and play your first open chords such as E minor, G, C and D. Changing between chords cleanly is the first real challenge; it feels slow at first and then suddenly clicks. Most beginners can strum simple songs within their first two months of weekly lessons and regular practice.

Months 3 to 12: technique, reading and a first grade

Next come strumming patterns, barre chords, simple melodies and scales, reading chord charts and tab, and the start of reading notation. This is when a guitarist usually becomes ready for a first graded exam, typically 6 to 12 months after starting. At Prism, guitar students can take ISoM graded exams, with Trinity College London (Rock & Pop), RSL Rockschool and LCME also available.

Grade by grade: what an average student can expect

Our guitar roadmaps are built for an average student who comes to class every week and practises at home two or three times a week. On that pace, the early grades take about two quarters each and the higher grades about three quarters each, which adds up to a little under six years from the first grade to Grade 8. Some students move faster, and that is fine too; the point is steady progress, not a race.

What speeds you up

  • Short, regular practice. Fifteen to twenty minutes most days beats two hours once a week.
  • Practising with a metronome. Playing in time is what makes you sound good to others. Our free online metronome and guitar tuner help between lessons.
  • Playing with others. Performing at recitals and jam sessions such as Prism's monthly Jam'In builds confidence faster than practising alone.
  • Learning songs you love. Motivation is the biggest factor of all.

Acoustic or electric first?

Either works. Acoustic guitar builds finger strength and suits singer-songwriters; electric guitar is easier on the fingers and suits rock and lead playing. Your teacher can help you choose at a demo, and the skills transfer both ways.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn guitar in 3 months?

In three months of weekly lessons and regular practice you can play a good number of songs with open chords and simple strumming. Reaching a graded-exam standard usually takes 6 to 12 months.

How many hours a day should I practise guitar?

For beginners, 15 to 30 minutes most days is enough. Regular short sessions build finger strength and chord changes faster than occasional long ones.

Is guitar hard to learn for adults?

No. Adults often understand chords and rhythm faster than children. The first few weeks are uncomfortable on the fingertips for everyone, and that passes quickly.
