How Long Does It Take to Learn Piano? From First Lesson to Grade 8

Quick answer: Most piano beginners play simple pieces within their first two months and are ready for a first graded exam in 6 to 12 months of weekly lessons and regular practice. An average student takes about 6 to 9 months per grade, so Grade 8 usually comes five to six years after starting.
The first months: reading notes and using both hands
Piano gives you a clear sound from the very first lesson, which is why children can start as young as four. The early work is reading notes on the stave, finding them on the keyboard, steady rhythm, and slowly getting both hands to do different things at once. Most beginners play simple pieces within their first two months.

The first year: technique and a first grade
Scales and arpeggios, playing with dynamics, simple chords for accompanying songs and short classical pieces come next. With weekly lessons and regular practice, a pianist is usually ready for a first graded exam within 6 to 12 months. At Prism, pianists can take ISoM graded exams first, with ABRSM, Trinity College London and LCME also available.
From Grade 1 to Grade 8
Our piano roadmaps are planned for an average student who attends class every week and practises at home two or three times a week. On that pace, early grades take about two quarters each and later grades about three quarters each, a little under six years from the first grade to Grade 8. Higher grades also need more music theory; if you are choosing ABRSM, Grades 6 to 8 need a Grade 5 theory pass first.
Classical, pop or both?
Learning piano does not have to mean only classical music. Students also learn chords for pop and Bollywood songs, accompanying singers and improvising, which makes practice more fun and is genuinely useful. The two approaches support each other: reading music from classical study and harmony from playing songs.

Frequently asked questions
Can an adult learn piano from scratch?
Yes. Adults are welcome at every level, including complete beginners, and often move quickly with music reading and chords.
How long should a child practise piano each day?
Young children do well with 10 to 15 minutes most days; older children and adults with 20 to 30 minutes. Regular short practice matters more than long sessions.
What age can my child start piano?
We start piano from age 4. Children younger than that can begin with a playful mixed music class.
